How to write a good quality tone

Personalize tones to speak in your unique voice

What's the key to harnessing an AI's full potential and achieving accurate, relevant, and creative engagements?

The answer lies in a well-crafted tone.

A good tone serves as a foundation for the AI:

  • It sets the context

  • It defines the scope

  • It specifies the desired tone and style to mimic

With a clear foundation, the AI knows what you want with better precision.

A tone with detailed and unambiguous instructions means:

  • Little to no misunderstandings

  • Better quality results

And that, ultimately, allows you to make engagements with prospects more effective and efficient.

How does AI understand your instructions?

AI understands our instructions through a process called natural language processing (NLP), which enables machines to interpret, analyze, and generate human language.

When we provide instructions, the AI uses algorithms and models trained on vast amounts of text data to decipher the meaning and intent behind our words.

By breaking down the input into components such as context, syntax, and semantics, AI can generate relevant and coherent responses that align with our directives. This ability to comprehend and respond to human language makes AI a powerful tool for various applications, from automated customer support to content generation.

If you have used ChatGPT before, creating or updating tones is exactly like talking to ChatGPT.

Here’s one prompt to ChatGPT

  • Write a funny joke about AI.

ChatGPT’s response:

  • Why did the AI break up with the computer? Because it found someone byte-ter!

  • Versus another

  • Write a funny joke about AI without using puns.

ChatGPT’s response:

  • Why did the AI refuse to play hide and seek?

  • Because it knew it would always find itself! (Brown, C. AI Humor: A Collection of Tech Jokes, TechComedyHub.com)

The bottom line?

The more specific and detailed you are with your instructions, the better (and more precise) the AI's output will be!

Likewise, on Engage AI:

A simple New Insight tone

  • Please be a curious, enthusiastic and insightful LinkedIn user who is friendly in response to the following LinkedIn post.

vs New Insight tone with more details

  • The above is a post on LinkedIn. I want to be an authoritative and insightful LinkedIn user who is friendly in response to the post.

  • Write and add brand new insights in response to the post. Make sure not to repeat what has already been said in the post

  • Use new words, phrases, ideas and insights.

  • Do not include any hashtags. You can use emoji as appropriate. Keep it short and professional.

How to write a good tone?

Tones are what you type into the input field to create a specific mood or tone.

You can write a good tone by using frameworks that ensure clarity, specificity, and contextual relevance. Here are some of the best frameworks to consider:

  • CO-STAR Framework (Context, Objective, Style, Tone, Audience, Requirements)

  • SCQA Framework (Situation, Complication, Question, Answer)

  • ICEDR Framework (Introduction, Context, Examples, Details, Results)

  • 5Ws and 1H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How)

  • SMART Framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)

  • TARS Framework (Task, Audience, Role, Style)

We recommend that you follow the CO-STAR Framework when writing a tone.

The CO-STAR framework explained:

  1. Context (C): Provide background information that helps the AI understand the specific scenario.

  2. Objective or Output (O): Clearly define the task that directs the AI’s focus.

  3. Style or Specifics (S): Specify the desired writing style that aligns with the AI response.

  4. Tone or Task (T): Set the tone to make sure the response resonates with the required sentiment.

  5. Audience or Assumptions (A): Identify the intended audience and tailor the AI’s response to be targeted to an audience.

  6. Response or Requirements (R): Provide the response format, such as the length of the text and what should and should not be included.

An example using the CO-STAR frame:

Context (C)

  • I am an AI with the expertise to assist SMB owners in engaging their customers on LinkedIn.

Objective or Output (O)

  • The above is a LinkedIn post, and I would like to comment on it to engage with the author.

Style or Specifics (S)

  • I have had coffee with the author before so that the comment will be casual but professional.

Tone or Task (T)

  • The suggested comment will include brand-new insights in response to the post above. It should also include [something specific about your product or service in the industry].

  • Also, please casually mention that you have solved this for your clients multiple times.

  • Use new words, phrases, ideas and insights with a new angle.

Audience or Assumptions (A)

  • The author is the head of engineering at a large Fortune 500 enterprise and an experienced speaker.

Response or Requirements (R)

  • Keep it less than 75 words.

  • Please don't use any emojis or hashtags.

  • When I ask you to do it again, please give me a new suggestion.
